Standard Portable Toilets Explained
Practical information from Myers Portable Toilets to help you understand rental options, planning considerations, and what to confirm with an independent provider.
A standard portable toilet is the basic self-contained restroom unit commonly used at events, construction sites and temporary locations. Core features generally include a privacy enclosure, toilet and holding tank, ventilation and secure door hardware. Other features vary by model and rental provider.

What’s Included in a Standard Unit
- A toilet seat and sealed holding tank that contains waste until the unit is serviced.
- A vented roof or wall panel to reduce odor buildup inside the unit.
- A door with an occupancy indicator (often showing “vacant” or “occupied”) and an interior lock.
- A toilet paper holder and, in many units, a small mirror or shelf.
- A hand sanitizer dispenser, though this is a basic sanitizing feature rather than actual running water for hand washing.

What a Standard Unit Doesn’t Include
Standard units don’t have running water or plumbed sinks, which is why dedicated hand-washing stations are often rented alongside them for events or job sites where hand washing (rather than just sanitizer) is preferred. See Portable Hand Washing Stations for that option. Standard units also aren’t designed for wheelchair accessibility; a separate accessible unit is used when that’s needed. See ADA Accessible Portable Toilets.
Common Uses
Standard portable toilets are typically the default choice for construction sites, outdoor events, and any situation where a simple, self-contained restroom option is needed without the space or setup required for larger alternatives. For events or projects that call for a higher-end or multi-stall option, see Restroom Trailers vs Portable Toilets for how that compares.
Servicing
Servicing needs depend on the number of users and units, rental length, event or project type, weather and site conditions, rental agreement, provider schedule and any applicable sanitation requirements. Confirm the planned service interval for longer or high-use rentals.

Availability note: Unit styles, features and equipment availability vary by rental provider and location. Confirm the exact configuration needed when requesting rental options.
